In the settings, let user chose where chattext comes from (top or bottom).

Chat text is currently coming from the bottom, which is quite intuitive, considering the fact that the newest line then is always right above the input line. Having the chat text come from the top in empty buffers is not consistent, and as far as I can think, there are no advantages to it.
Implementing this would not only require extra work in ChatWidget, but would also mean adding another config option.
If anybody would like to see this option, please feel free to reopen this bug, after adding your arguments to this discussion.
